PICU Day 5

Little guy had a pretty good day today. His breathing looked MUCH improved over yesterday, and he was pretty much doing everything on his own. He mostly just rested and enjoyed his good drugs.
Tomorrow is a huge day for him. The docs have already come to talk to us about the possibility of a Trach. They wanted to know if it would be OK to place one tomorrow if Carter fails his extubation. We just aren't ready for that step yet, so we told them absolutely not! We would appreciate a ton of prayers tomorrow. The little guy needs them.
Our niece, Erika, gave us a one of the best gifts ever today. She had to do a project for her art class, and chose Carter as her subject. Check it out! It looks just like him! Thank you so much Erika, it's so good to know that you love the little man. We're putting it on our mantle for everyone to see. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

Stand you ground with the trach. The doctor's pushed for a YEAR or more with Ben when he was first born. We finally got to a point where we didn't have a choice anymore - long story, but before that point he did great without it. We'll definitely keep sweet Carter in our prayers. Hang in there!!! The PICU is NOT an easy place to be - especially when things are stressful.

I agree-no trach. If something changes down the road you can always change your mind. But for now...no way!

I'm glad to hear that Carter has had a better day. Hoping that trend continues.

And wow! awesome drawing of Carter! Your neice is very talented!

Oh my gosh that picture is too cute! I'm with Becky, stand your ground with the trach. Our kids take a while to extubate, trach or not! Jax still has to stay on the vent after surgeries even with the trach, its just them. Pulmo docs up there are trach happy. Make sure you take to Phefer before you make that decision. Jax has had a terrible airway since almost birth too, and he was 4 when we finally had to trach him.

He is looking good, and oh my goodness look at that drawing! Erika is one talented girl. I would love someone to draw a picture like that of Peanut!

I hope that they give Carter some more time to rest and recover before worrying about the extubation. I wouldn't let them push you into a trach until you are ready and sure.

I can't believe they would throw that at you - trach him today. I would have said no too - that is definitely a decision I would not make in one day. Praying for your little guy. Love the drawing of him!
